Mersea Island is connected to the mainland via a causeway which at some high tides becomes completely submerged. Please check the tide times before travelling to Mersea and do not attempt to drive across the causeway when it is under water. This can cause danger to life and the salt water can badly damage your vehicle.

With effect from 17 April 2022 - New route 86 will replace route 67, from West Mersea to Colchester, running every hour with a quicker journey time (this is possible due to no longer serving the residential area of Monkwick). Off-peak, and on Saturdays, buses will extend beyond the town centre to Colchester Railway Station and Colchester General Hospital.

The custom built ferry boat has a ramp allowing easy access for wheelchair users and cyclists as well as foot passengers.
Brightlingsea Foot Ferry will operate a "Dial a Ferry" service in low season - April to October.
"Dial a Ferry" can be booked by calling the Harbour Office before 1pm daily on 01206 302200 or mobile 07981 450169 during operating times.

The Mersea Island Lions Community Bus runs as follows:
Every 1st Wednesday of the month. From Mersea (leaves at 8.30am) to Tollgate (returns at noon).
Every 3rd Wednesday of the month. From Mersea (leaves at 8.30am) to Colchester (returns at noon). 
The Community Bus is driven by volunteer drivers.
