The White Hart (currently closed)
1 High Street, West Mersea, CO5 8QD.
The White Hart is the emblem of Richard II by whom Mersea was given a Charter.
History - The White Hart is probably the oldest pub on the island - although it is not a listed building  An inner section of the saloon bar dates back to the 13th century, there is also a small medieval stained glass window of some age (now covered up).
The pub has been an Inn and is, reputedly, haunted. There is a story about a Mrs D'Wit wife of "General" D'Wit who did not die in the pub but at home in her bed, nevertheless she apparently still seeks her ne'er do well husband who habitually stayed drinking after hours. She wears a blue velvet gown and holds a blue velvet muff and can sometimes be seen at dusk lighting a candle over the fireplace.
The cellar is also, allegedly, haunted by a black labrador dog which belonged at one time to Landlord Mr Leo Smith.
